Antica Trattoria Marconi A Carticcia

This was the best food I had in Calabria! And the waitress was so nice and patient with my limited Italian. They were even willing to prepare a vegetarian pasta dish for my sister that wasn't on the menu. If you want delicious, local food I recommend trying this place!

We had a couple of hours till our next train and glad we came upon this Trattoria. Home style honest flavoursome food of Calabria. Grazie Mille.

We were in Villa San Giovanni after two months in Sicily simply to say we has set foot in Calabria. We'd had trouble finding the ferry schedule and needed to get right back to catch our train back to Cefalu so we didn't have much time to eat. I had seen Trattoria Marconi on Maps but thought it was too far away. So we stumbled into it not really knowing what it was.We ordered the Calabrese Antipasti, a pasta with ragu of meat and mushrooms and spaghetti with mussels. Everything was great. The Antipasti plate had four fried croquette type things. One was a soft meatball. Another was a kind of vegetable paste. A third was a ricotta type of cheese. A fourth was filled with a paste of hot peppers. There were cured meats and cheeses and marinated mushrooms. Everything was very flavorful and with my wife and I sharing, not too much food.When we came in, we were the only people at the restaurant but then three large groups of business people came in. All were fed a fixed menu. This is clearly a place that caters to its local working people.For the pasta on the side were (I think) a kind of pecorino cheese and marinated hot peppers. We had a nice chilled house red wine.It was such a delightful and tasty meal. We were also in and out and easily caught our ferry back.If you like 'local' food, find yourself in the Villa San Giovanni train or ferry station, and need more that 'just something to fill your stomach', you will have a treat going to Trattoria Marconi.

Outstanding service and food quality. We ate in between taking bus and train, food came incredibly fast. Not on the pictures, but I would highly recommend the starters - very typical food for calabria and perfect taste. Can only recommend !!

Grabbed a pasta lunch between trains. So good!! One of the best meals we've had during 3 weeks in Italy.

Best food during our trip in Calabria and certainly the best , friendlest service too! And the only clean bagno so far! The dish of the day (tuna with rocket and caramelised onion) was absolutely tasty, wow. The lady was extremely friendly and helpful, her biscotti were a real bonus, just what I needed, a perfect treat. Grazie mille!!
